The wealth of information in the cryptocurrency and blockchain space can be difficult to digest because of the sheer volume it. Social media websites such as Reddit, Twitter, and Facebook have become crucial in order to sift through the vast amounts of daily information. Various influencers across these social media platforms have risen to popularity due to providing quality analysis to their followers. Some influencers have amassed over 50,000 followers and garner monthly impressions above 50 million.

With the immense level of exposure to influencer content, rogue social media scammers have created look-alike accounts in order to deceive the influencers' large following. They do this by creating extremely similar account names to the influencer they are trying to impersonate and then commenting on their posts with directions to send cryptocurrency funds to wallets that the scammers have access too:

As you can see, there is no difference in the name of the accounts but the usernames are completely different. This is a clear signal that different accounts are speaking regardless of the social media platform you are using. Always check to see which username is speaking to you!

Hackers will pose messages like this across crypto social media influencers' accounts, usually to be found in the replies section offering a giveaway. In our experience on various social media outlets, no true influencer in the space requests crypto payments from their social media accounts. If the ones you follow do, we suggest that you reexamine why it is you are following them in the first place.

If for some reason you are unsure of whether or not the "offer" has legitimacy, the best approach would be to not contribute crypto to "offers" received from anonymous social media influencers. This may seem like common sense but in this space, many have fallen victim to this type of trickery.

Closing Statement

This was an introduction to proper security procedures and how each should be utilized in the cryptocurrency space. Cryptocurrency is the wild west of finance in the sense that protecting one's assets falls on the responsibility of the market participant more than ever before. The resources needed to ensure privacy and security in the cryptocurrency market exist, but it is up to you, the user, to be aware of them and employ them correctly. Please do not take this section lightly, as it may very well be the most important aspect concerning your participating in this emergent financial revolution.
